About Michael
Michael Rose is a multi-talented fine art professional with over a decade of experience working with artists, collectors, and audiences. The gallery manager of the historic Providence Art Club, he also advises collectors and artists, teaches, writes, and completes curatorial projects. Michael has worked with hundreds of artists and thousands of works of art, becoming one of the Northeast’s most trusted art professionals in the process.
Since 2014 Michael has served as the gallery manager at the historic Providence Art Club, one of the nation’s oldest arts organizations. Under his leadership, the Art Club was recognized as one of the state’s top three art galleries by The Providence Journal and received coveted Best of Rhode Island Awards for Best Art Gallery in Providence five years in a row (2019 - 2023). Michael instituted events like the Club’s College Biennial and its annual Community Invitational Exhibition, welcoming new artists to exhibit in the organization’s storied galleries. He also cultivated the Club’s National Exhibition to become one of the most popular of its kind, bringing in significant jurors from major museums like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
A respected writer, Michael has produced the popular weekly “Inside Art” column for Rhode Island news site GoLocalProv.com since 2021. Through his articles he reviews exhibitions, profiles artists, and covers current events in the local arts community. Prior to joining GoLocalProv, Michael published essays on art, architecture, and film for Big Red & Shiny, Art New England, and the Taunton Daily Gazette. He also continues to write regularly for his personal blog Fine Art Insights, and has produced an accompanying podcast.
A passionate speaker on topics related to art history and art business, Michael has been invited to present at numerous organizations including universities, museums, and associations. He enjoys engaging with the public in dynamic conversations around art appreciation. He is also a sought after juror and has been invited to help shape exhibitions and judge artworks at institutions throughout New England.
Michael earned his Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Providence College and his Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts at New York University. He has completed additional professional development in courses at the Rhode Island School of Design, Appraisers Association of America, and the New England Museum Association. Additionally, he is an alumnus of Practice//Practice, AS220's nationally regarded residency for arts administrators. He was recognized as “22 to Watch” in 2022 by GoLocalProv, has been featured as a “Celebrity Guide” for Gallery Night Providence, and is listed as a Notable Alumnus by the Providence College Department of Art and Art History.
An active member of the community, Michael has served on boards and committees for organizations like Rhode Island Latino Arts, Gallery Night Providence, RISD Museum Gallery Lecturers, Art League Rhode Island, and WaterFire Providence, among others.
